by Magnus Enckell
The place is spacious, packed with men in elegant black suits and bows. All the men have dark hair. Three men are to be seen clearly, one of which is young and the other two are middle aged and have really short hair. One of the mature men has a mustache and a beard and the second has a mustache. Everyone’s attention is on something undetermined. The young man seems impressed and pleased, while the older ones seem uninterested.
Enckell was the first Finnish artist to represent Naturalism in his art, a style of portrayal based on a realistic, unidealistic approach. Until the first year of the 20th century, Enckell's color pallete is dark and faint,as seen in Listeners of Music, painted in 1897. The setting surprises natural poses and exposes everyday emotions.
Through the warm shades, the artist creates a hearty atmosphere, whilst the dark tones make the art piece mysterious. The painting is mainly monochromatic, drawing the attention to the people. The man on the right is taken away by his thoughts, used to the music, not able to appreciate and feel it anymore. Meanwhile, the young man feels enchanted, hearing each note connecting to the next one and composing melody. We can only imagine the melody, which adds to the beauty of Enckell's painting. Without hearing it, Enckell makes us feel it.
